Applesauce Chocolate Chip Cake

This is the Griffeth cake that Grant's grandma ALWAYS made for birthdays.


Applesauce Chocolate Chip Cake

2 c. sugar
2 eggs
½ c. shortening
½ c. butter
½ c. warm water w/ 2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. applesauce
3 ½ c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. ground cloves
1 ½ tsp. salt
2 T. cocoa
½ tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. allspice
1 c. nuts (optional)

Alternate dry ingredients, applesauce, and soda mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Frost with the following:

Brown Sugar Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup milk
3 c. confectioners' sugar
1/2 t. vanilla

In saucepan melt butter. Add brown sugar; cook over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring. Add milk; continue to cook until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat. Gradually add confectioners' sugar. Add vanilla; mix well. Thin, if necessary, with few drops of evaporated milk.
